X-ray Services for Pets

Advanced imaging for pet diagnosis. Contact us to book an appointment.

Radiography (X-rays) is one of the main tools we use at our hospital to diagnose health conditions. X-rays are useful when it’s impossible to diagnose your cat or dog’s symptoms with physical examinations. An X-ray provides an image of the internal organs and structures of the patient’s body. Special training is required to interpret the results of the scan. At Rimbey Veterinary Clinic, we are proud to offer digital X-rays which provide faster results and a safer procedure. To discuss radiology with someone from our team, please call us at 403-843-2234.

What happens during an X-ray?

X-rays use electromagnetic radiation to capture images of your cat or dog’s organs, bones and teeth. To avoid blurry images, a sedative may be given to the patient so they can remain still during the scan. Unlike traditional X-rays, digital X-rays will present the image on the computer monitor where the veterinarian can resize without losing image quality. This also means that it can be easily sent to experts if needed.

When are X-rays recommended for cats and dogs?

X-rays are very useful to identify hard or extremely dense organs. We use X-rays to examine the heart, colon, intestines, bladder, lungs, prostate and stomach. X-rays can diagnose and monitor:

  • Heart disease
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Fractures
  • Pneumonia

Are X-rays safe?

The radiation emitted during X-rays are relatively low, the amount decreases even more when digital X-rays are used. When compared to traditional X-rays, digital X-rays use 80% less radiation. Your companion is unlikely to develop any illness and will be kept comfortable and safe during the procedure. We also provide protective covers over other parts of the patient's body that are not being radiographed.
