Surgery can be nerve-racking for pet owners, as they immediately worry about anesthesia. At our clinic we are here to answer your questions and calm any fears you have about surgery. The first step is to make sure you are well-informed about the techniques, benefits, risks and the protocols we follow to ensure your cat or dog’s safety. Our entire team wants to see your loyal companion happy and healthy which is why we will do our absolute best to make sure surgery and recovery goes well.

How safe is surgery for my pet?

Making sure our patients remain safe during surgery and other medical procedures is extremely important to us. Our team of veterinarians and veterinary technicians is skilled in using anesthesia and monitoring patients to ensure their safety and provide the most comfortable experience. You can be confident that we use the most effective and up-to-date protocols. One of the most important steps we take is pre-anesthetic testing. We will run tests before the surgery to reveal underlying conditions that can complicate the procedure. The type of anesthesia we use depends on the procedure. Some require general anesthesia, while others may only call for local anesthesia. General anesthesia makes the patient unconscious and local anesthesia will numb a particular area. We also closely monitor every procedure, regardless of whether it’s routine or more advanced. A veterinary technician will continually assess your pet’s heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs to help prevent any anesthetic risk.

What surgical procedures do you offer?

At Rimbey Veterinary Clinic, our team can skillfully perform a variety of surgeries. In some cases, we may refer our patients who require more advanced procedures to a board-certified surgeon. We regularly perform the following surgeries:

1. Dental extractions
2. Spays and neuters
3. Foreign object removal
4. Soft Tissue surgery - eyes, ears, removal of lumps
5. Orthopedic surgery - bone and ligament injuries. We offer SIMITRI Stable in Stride and Arthrex Tightrope surgical repairs for knee disease.

What will recovery be like for my cat or dog?

Our team will be very involved in the patient’s recovery. Once the surgery has completed, we will monitor your loyal companion until the anesthesia wears off. Your cat or dog is allowed to go home once they are comfortable to stand, eat or drink on their own. We will prescribe pain medication to be administered at specific times. To keep the surgical wound clean, your veterinarian will recommend a cone or recovery suit/shirt. We will schedule follow-up appointments to keep tabs on their recovery.
