Deworming Services for Pets

Keeping your loyal companion worm-free by administering preventives regularly.

Prevention is the best medicine especially when caring for your cherished felines and canines. Deworming is a preventative treatment where we administer medication to flush out worms and prevent them in the future.

How often should my pet be dewormed?

As a puppy or kitten your companion needs to be dewormed regularly. Even before they are born puppies and kittens are exposed to internal worms from their mother. Because of this, they should begin deworming medication as early as 2 to 4-weeks-old. They should continue to be dewormed every 2 weeks until they are 3 months old.

As an adult, your veterinarian will determine how often throughout the year your cat or dog should be dewormed. The minimum requirement is at least twice a year.

What are some worms that can infect my cat or dog?

At Rimbey Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians may recommend a broad-spectrum dewormer that provides protection from a variety of parasitic worms. Here are the intestinal worms that your cat or dog may catch:

  • Heartworms
  • Hookworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Whipworms
  • Roundworms

How do worms affect felines and canines?

Internal parasites are extremely dangerous for your cat or dog as these organisms can damage organs once inside, which in severe cases can cause death. Worm symptoms don’t always manifest themselves early, but rather weeks or months after your dog or cat has been infected. This is why we recommend routine deworming even if there aren’t any signs. Intestinal worms will have the following effect on your loyal companion:

  1. Loss of appetite
  2. Sudden weight loss
  3. Labored breathing
  4. Diarrhea
  5. Swollen belly
  6. Vomiting
  7. Scooting

Is deworming safe?

Yes, deworming is completely safe for cats and dogs. It is very rare for your loyal companion to experience any side effects. In some cases, your cat or dog may become lethargic, lose their appetite, vomit, have diarrhea and/or salivate excessively. If you notice any changes after your loyal companion is given a dewormer, you can always contact our team to discuss what is normal or not.
