Microchipping for Pets

An effective and permanent form of identification for companion animals.

Microchipping is a pain-free and permanent solution to ensure your cat or dog returns home. Losing your loyal companion at any time can be stressful especially knowing their ID tags can be removed. Microchips are about the size of a rice grain and it goes under the skin behind the neck. Each chip has an identification number that is registered to a database with your contact details. This small device can make a big difference if your cherished companion gets lost. To schedule an appointment to have your cat or dog microchipped please call us at 403-843-2234.

Is microchipping more effective than ID tags/collars?

Microchip definitely has its advantages over physical forms of identification. That being said, our veterinarians will typically recommend both. Collars and tags are still effective but in many cases, they can be removed or damaged or even lost. Microchips are underneath the skin and once implanted properly, it will stay there forever. Unlike a collar, the microchip won’t need any upkeep or replacement.

When can I have my cat or dog microchipped?

To have peace of mind you should have your loyal companion microchipped as soon as possible. As a puppy or kitten, they can be microchipped as early as eight weeks old. During their wellness exam your veterinarian will discuss preventative care which includes microchipping.

Do all veterinary clinics or shelters check for a microchip?

Yes, they do. All veterinary clinics and humane shelters have the special barcode reader that is needed to locate a microchip. Microchipping is fairly common and most people know that when they find a cat or dog they should take them to a shelter or vet to have them scanned for a microchip. Once the chip is identified your information can be retrieved from the pet recovery database to return your cherished cat or dog.
